Kamisama Hajimemashita cosplay photoshoot

Approaching this shoot for Kamisama Hajimemashita, cosplayed by Zimiel and Karen, what was really important to both the cosplayers and I that we really depict the relationship between the characters in a manner faithful to the original material.

For the location, we used Sydney-based Ryokan Gojyuan, with whom I have a friendly working relationship. It just so happens that they are pretty much the only authentic Japanese inn in Sydney.

The challenge with many shoots, especially when you have such a good location as this, is avoiding over-lighting everything – or in this case, to evoke a natural kind of feeling. Towards this end, I was going mostly with a reflector for the shots outside in the corridor and garden.

Inside the room, however, we had to deal with insufficient amounts of light. I had a bright morning kind of look in mind, but with the door closed and the weather varying outside, we simply did not have the light needed. So I boosted the light levels by positioning two flashes outside the paper screen door, and just let the large amount of diffused light bounce around the room naturally.

The result is a simulated situation where a bright sun is outside shining in on the shoji screen doors, giving the pictures a bright morning glow.
